Watching our dogs grow older is one of the most bittersweet parts of pet parenthood. In this post, I’m sharing how our sweet Herky is starting to show signs of aging — and what we’re doing to support her as she enters her senior years. šŸ’›

This journey is emotional, eye-opening, and filled with love. If you have a senior pup (or just want to be prepared), I hope this post and the video below offer insight and comfort.

🐾 Herky Is Slowing Down

Herky has always been full of life, playful energy, and sass. But lately, we’ve noticed some changes:

  • She’s not as quick to jump onto the couch or bed

  • She takes longer to get up after a nap

  • Her energy levels are lower on walks

  • Her face has more grey (still adorable, of course!)

These little things were easy to brush off at first, but over time, they’ve added up. They’re all gentle reminders that Herky is aging — and that she needs different care now than she did just a few years ago.

šŸ” What We’re Changing at Home

To help Herky feel more comfortable day-to-day, we’ve made small but meaningful adjustments at home:

  • Dog stairs and ramps: To help her safely get on the couch and bed without straining her joints.

  • Orthopedic beds: Soft and supportive, perfect for resting aging bodies.

  • Shorter, more frequent walks: Instead of long adventures, we’re sticking to easier strolls tailored to her pace.

  • Supplements: Joint support and senior-specific nutrients (under vet guidance).

  • More cuddles and quiet time: Senior dogs often seek more rest and affection — and Herky is no exception.

ā¤ļø Being Emotionally Prepared

Caring for a senior dog isn’t just about physical changes. It’s emotional, too. There’s a deep tenderness that comes with watching your pup grow older — and a sense of responsibility to make these years just as full of love and comfort.

We’re learning to slow down with Herky, to soak in the little moments, and to be more present. Whether it’s extra time on the couch or letting her sniff around a little longer on a walk, every minute matters.

🐶 Milton’s Role

Milton is still full of energy and helps keep Herky young at heart. Their bond is as strong as ever, and we’re so grateful that Herky has a built-in best friend and emotional support buddy. They balance each other out perfectly. šŸ’•

✨ Final Thoughts

If your dog is entering their senior years too, know that you’re not alone. These changes can be hard, but they’re also a chance to deepen your bond in the most meaningful way.

Herky has given us so much joy — and now, it’s our turn to give her the gentle care and love she needs in this next chapter.
